Question: What reasons do dog breeders have for making more and more puppies.?
(Posted by: Gigolo Aunt on 2010-01-12 11:33:51)
Are they pimping thier dogs to make money? Do they think it's simply just cute to see lickle puppies? How do they live with themselves when they know for a fact that homing centres up and down the counrty are full to capacity all the time with unwanted dogs and many perfectly homeable dogs are destroyed to make room for more unwanted puppies? Hmmm? ...even "reputable " breeders. Why are they doing it? For the money?? dogs that are bred by "reputable " breeders....do they exist at the expense of thousands of unneccessarily destroyed dogs? dallydaf......as long as you are doing it so that the pups can love you then that justifies everything.....it is also very very indicative. puppies and adult dogs in shelters come from all types of breeders. Bloodhounds all the way........shame on you.....there..is..no..excuse..to...make...more...dogs. These explanations are just as I expected. |

I think you should target this question at backyard breeders and puppy mills that give no thought to breeding. There are other reasons for reputable breeders to breed. |

What you are describing are backyard breeders and puppy mills. Reputable show and working breeders do it because they love their breed, and they want to improve it by breeding the healthiest dogs with near perfect conformation or working drive. They do not contribute to the overpopulation of dogs in shelters. Edit: They do not do it for the money, they hardly ever break even. |

I agree entirely, I see people on here slating other people for letting their mongrel dogs get pregnant and justify themselves by saying they only breed to improve the breed of dog. BS! They do it to make money pure and simple. If they are improving the breed of dog how come BBC, Pedigree etc have pulled out of Crufts and it isn't televised anymore. It should be made illegal to breed without a license in fact, just stop dog breeding for 10 years and maybe there won't be so many dogs being put down. Good question btw. |

Ignorance mostly. I used to be one of the ignorant. I love pit bulls and owned a male and female that were both registered, both had great conformation, and I thought, most importantly, had great temperaments. I honestly thought that if I bred them and found good homes for the pups that I would be helping spread the word that pits are good dogs etc etc. plus I could make a few bucks at the same time. So, we bred the dogs and THEN I started getting more involved in the PB community. I started really paying attention to how many dogs there are without homes. I saw how much it really cost to have a healthy litter and find homes for healthy pups. Now, I love my dogs, so I have them fixed. Thats the best thing for them. |

They do it for profit. Perhaps, one day, it will be properly regulated. I would like to see a national ban on puppy sales in the month of December. |

Where do the puppies in the shelters come from? From bad breeders and bad owners. At least if the pup comes from a good breeder, it should be healthier. The bad breeders should not breed, that is true but the good breeders have every right to breed their dogs. If everyone quit breeding dogs, they would become extinct and it would be a sad world without them. |

Dog breeders who do it right don't pimp their dogs, and have more of a purpose then creating cute wittle puppies..they are preserving a breed that has been around for decades, and have contracts set in place so that none of the pups they produce end up in shelters. They don't flood the market to fill a demand, they do it for the love of the breed. Blame the byb's that don't breed to standard, breed for the demand, and only do it to line their pockets without a backwards glance after the money is in their wallets.. |

Not all breeders are like that. you are being very misguided. only BYB's and puppymills are like this... |

Well this breeder doesn't breed "more and more puppies "! We breed ONLY when WE want another dog. The ONLY problem we have with placing our pups is telling people NO we don't have one for you. Sorry but the CHAMPIONS that come out of those "homing centers " are few and far between. So if you (or anyone else) wants someones leftover stray, be my guest and get a pup from a "homing center ". I choose to set my sights a little higher. |

BYB and puppy mills do it for money. Pure and simple. A reputable breeder spends more money on health testing than they will ever make on the puppies themselves. Any good breeder will not make a profit and will usually just break even. It is done for the love of the breed. Then there is my favorite category of breeders - the accidental breeders. They have no idea what they are doing, and their intact female just "got pregnant ". Then they think it would be fun to have a litter of cute little puppies. |

Good breeders- Should only breed to better the breed and know it's not a business or a way to make a "quick buck ". They do research for years about their chosen breed to know the good and the bad about that breed and only breed for the good. Have their health checks, vet, whelping supplies, waiting lists, etc all lined up before the breeding even happens. Screen potential buyers to make sure they are going to a good home and will take back a puppy anytime during it's life if the buyer can't care for it anymore. Bad "breeders "- Breed for the money, breed so they can have puppies, think they are a breeder because they have a male and female of the same breed, are to irresponsible to get their dogs fixed, very little to no vet care before, during, or after pregnancy, will sell to anyone who has some money in their hand and never think of that puppy ever again, etc. |

Well according to our resident BYB show breeders breed to show their dogs so they can win some big $50,000 prize... even tho only ONE show offers that prize. BYBs breed for money. What other reasons would they have for risking their dog's life and safety repeatedly? Because they figure they can make all this money on their little mongrel pups. |

I am proud to say that I am a breeder. I breed dogs that are from conformationally correct parents who have been tested for congenital defects. All my pups come with a health guarantee and a contract that states that under no circumstances are they to be given to shelter or rescue for any reason- I have a no questions asked take back policy. I can do that because I carefully screen potential buyers, I have an iron clad spay/ neuter contract and limited registrations for pet pups and I only breed one or two litters per year. I have no problem admitting that I breed dogs while there are dogs in shelters- I have adopted four over my adult life myself (and two cats) adn have volunteered at my local shelter and greyhound rescue. So, save your rant for people who are out there breeding willy nilly with no thought to type, temperament or health and who don't screen their puppy buyers to ensure that their pups are going to good homes. It's laughable that anyone could actually make money breeding. I spent more on showing, testing, and whelping all for ONE litter in the last three years than most people spend to send their kids to college for a year and then out of 9 pups four were co-own agreements and one I kept back for my next show dog, so I actually sold 4. At a pet price of $1200 each, it didn't even cover the expense of breeding her and having a c-section, so again, save it for people who are the real problem, not reputable breeders. |

Responsible/ reputable breeders do it to better the breed. they hardly ever make a profit out of it. a reputable breeders dog might say only have 3 or 4 litters in its life. whereas a byb would breed their dog(s) every time they came in to season. |
