Question: Rescue dog house training?

We just rescued a 1 year old German Shorthair a few days ago. He will pee outside with no problem, but will not poop. He is walked 3 times a day for about 2 miles each time and gets biked for 15- 20 minutes twice a day. (His energy is endless) He didn't have any training as a puppy we think. Since Wednesday, he has learned to sit on command, walk on a leash properly, lay down, use stairs, and leave it. But he will only poop inside. Since his first accident he's under supervision all the time. We've caught him trying to go to the bathroom twice since then. He was about halfway done both times. So I stopped him and took him into the yard. I waited for 2 and a half hours both times. But he won't go. He just runs around for a minute and then sits down and waits for me to take him back inside. When I do (after the 2.5 hours) he goes and lays down or plays. But he doesn't try to poop again. What else can I do? All the other dogs I've trained have given up and gone outside withing 10 minutes, but he's perfectly willing to wait. Thank you, he is in a crate for sleeping and whenever we can't watch him. The only time he's been able to get away to try and go is when he runs down stairs and starts immediately. Thank you for the advice.

Well 2 1/ 2 hours is way to long for you to sit outside with him waiting for him to go. I understand what you are trying to do but he does not and he just thinks it is playtime. For now the yard should only be used to go potty and that is it. No play back there. He needs to understand he is out there for a reason. Continue to do your normal routine of walking and bike riding though. It is good you caught him half way through but you need to catch him as he starts. When I bring our fosters in that are not potty trained they have NO free range of my home at all. They are leashed to my side at all times. This gives them no opportunity to start to go without me catching it immediately and bringing them outside. This is what you are going to need to do. Yes it is a pain but within 2-3 weeks your dog will be potty trained. Make sure while he is going you are using the command at the same time. Use go potty..good boy going potty or something to that affect. That will train him to go on command at the same time you are praising him. The only other way is a crate but you did not mention you are using a crate. I personally use both but never freedom of my house if they are not potty trained.

Lather on your sunscreen, bring your laptop outside and wait. When you give in and go inside, you are telling him that if he just waits long enough, he'll get what he wants (to go inside). That's not the message you want to give to him. In addition to doing the above if you catch him going inside, do what I call "hawk watch " where you ALWAYS know where he is and what he is doing. Loop a leash around a belt loop and clip the leash to the dog. If he gets up and starts pacing or sniffing the ground, take him outside. Take him outside first thing in the morning, after a hard nap, and 15 minutes after eating or drinking.

Then i guess you should not have rescued him if you can't be a good trainer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
