Anybody with or without qualifications can declare themselves to be a dog trainer and start taking people's money. Look at Ceasar Milan. Most universities offer dog training within their psychology department. You could also go to apdt.com Training and certification will add to your ability and credibility.

No you do not have to go to school to train dogs. You do even have to have much dog experience to call yourself a dog trainer. To be an excellent trainer you need to have trained many dogs of all sizes with all types of problems. Competing with your own dogs in dog events will help you get your name out there. At your age, try and get into a 4H club or junior kennel club so that you can learn how to train your own dog. Read books about training and watch dvds. There are many out there. Keep an open mind but don't be so open that your brains fall out. Find a good training mentor to help you. If you are going to take classes, start out with business classes. More businesses fail due to lack of business knowledge then anything else. You can also take some classes in animal and human behavior; animal husbandry, etc. Remember you are also training people so you need to be able to communicate with people. Yes, summer jobs will help you no matter what field you go in to. Work will make you responsible. Plus the more you work the more money you will make.

The trainer i used actually went to an obedience class in his area and studied with them and was eventually able to teach a few classes and went from there experience speaks louder than any amount of qualifications you can get
