Question: Whats us a good online dog training school? i am interested in becoming a therapy dog/service dog trainer?

I am currently an unemployed Social Worker with a strong passion for dogs and their ability to have a positive impact on others lives. I am interested in one day opening a business that provides dog training and therapy dog services and I am not quite sure where to start. I figure becoming a dog trainer is a good first step and I need some advise on online dog training schools. I have heard good and bad things about ABC but that is the only school for dog training I have heard of. Can anyone help me? I know that ABC is mainly theory and paperwork however they require volunteer work and an externship. So there is a hands on aspect you just do not go to a campus. Still not a good ideA? Have you ever trained a dog to do anything? That is the first step in dog training. Online programs will help you with techniques but the best way to learn to train dogs is to train lots of dogs. You need to learn how to read many types of dogs. You will also need to learn how to pair service dogs with owners and train the owner. The best place to start is to work under a local trainer in your area to learn the basics of actual hands on training. ABC is no better or worse then any place else. You'll get good paper training but no actual training.

I'd be very leery of hiring a trainer whose certification came from a school that offered no hands-on training with live dogs. What you would be learning is just theory, which may look good on paper, but would probably only be useful in a handful of dogs that cross your path. Volunteering with local shelters and service/ therapy dog trainers will give you the practical experience that will actually mean something
