Training A Dog
Training a dog information
Crate-training a dog that's used to free-reign?
Almost two weeks ago, I adopted my first dog a two year old Italian Greyhound Beagle mix from a rescue. At the family rescue where she was for the last year and a half of her life, she was used to sleeping in the bed with the couple who runs the rescue...and I have made minimal effort to convince her to sleep in her own bed. But I've decided, after lots of dog hair and finding a flea in my bed, that I don't really want her to sleep in the bed with me, adorable and cuddly as she is....How should I go about introducing her to the crate, considering she's never used one? I just want to enclose her in a crate at bedtime...not during the day or when I'm gone. Should I keep the crate in my bedroom or in another room?Ahh...I'm scared of hurting her feelings, too...any advice for if she whines or anything like that?
I need help kennel training a dog?!?
i have a four month old puppy. i put her in her kennel from 9am to about 4pm. Everyday i come home to poop and pee in her kennel. What should i do to make it stop? When i was growing up, i was always told to shove tn it and scold them. Does that actually work? Thanks Thank you guys so much for answering the way you did My dad thinks that is the way to do it but i think it is wrong and nasty. You've been great
Does clicker training a dog require you first learn to train a chicken, pig or cat?
I'm reading over Karen Pryor's website where she advocates people first train another species using a clicker before they attempt it on their dog. link attached .I'm wondering if people who use clicker training can tell me if they found it beneficial and relevant to first train a chicken or a cat, or any other species of animal before they trained their dog.clickertraining.com node 2996BTW, I'm not being smug or sarcastic. I'm asking what purpose this serves? My present view is that chickens for example are not companion animals. At best, they are a bird that pays dividends eggs . While I believe you could train a chicken to peck a specific spot or target on command what does this have to do with training a dog other than I presume learning to time the click Perhaps I am grossly overestimating the intelligence of my dogs.

I took her for a very long and she didn't go and as soon as I brought her in she peed on the floor. She refuses to go outside and if I don't potty train her my mom will give her back. Help? She is 12 weeks old.
How do you train a dog to be a guard dog?
I'm almost 16 and I love dogs the most out of anything. I've been trying to convince my parents into letting me get a rottweiler. They're leaning toward yes and might let me get one this spring.I'm more of the person to hug and kiss and love dogs rather than telling they what is ok and training them. Seeing as how I plan on having my own dogs later in life and how I'm 16 and if I get the dog it'll be all mine, I need to learn how to train them. A rottweiler will live with me for about 10 years or more. During that time I'll leave home and live on my own, I'm also very scared of people breaking in or trying to hurt me so I want something to protect me more. My family's two lab dogs are more friendly and not really the type to go after someone if they break in. And I don't think our little 12 pound dog stands much of a chance. So, how can I learn to train a dog and get it to be a guard dog? How do I 'toughen up' and make sure a puppy learns I'm the boss? Any videos or books? Advice?

How to train a dog that nipped at an 8 month old unprovoked?
This is a 8.5 year old mini schnauzer that has nipped at kids in the past, but those kids were running, yelling and playing. So when kids were around I would hold her and comfort her so I knew everyone was safe. Now the reason I am asking is 8 month old baby and I were sitting on the floor with the dogs. My baby was working on trying to crawl and being quite doing so. I was petting the dogs and then the mini sch. walked past me and over to the baby, paused for a split second, then nipped the baby in the face before I could even tell her to get back. Luckily it did not break the skin or leave a scratch. Normally I can tell her to get back when she shows a sign of anxiety and she does, but this happened too quickly. The only idea I have come up with to make the situation safe is to find a home for the dog. I HATE the thought of re homing the dog, she was the beginning of my " family" , but not going to have my baby be bait while I work with the dog. Plus the behavior is so random and unprovoked I have no idea of how to begin to train the dog. I have very well mannered dogs and know how to train them, but this is beyond me knowledge. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated This is tearing at my heart and keeps bringing tears to my eyes, but need to do something quick.Let me add that the dog does not bite adults. This is strictly a problem she has with children. I have tried re directing her and giving her toys to carry in her mouth when her anxiety is heightened, but for some reason sometimes she just snaps.
