Easiest way to train a dog not to be aggressive?

Question: Easiest way to train a dog not to be aggressive?

(Posted by: on 2010-08-07 09:15:21)

My dog is a 3 and a half year old chocolate lab and he needs help learning how to not be aggressive when he sees other male dogs. When he went to the dog park he almost got in a fight with another dog while on a leash and was called a 'beast'. He is a sweet dog but something snaps inside him when he sees another male dog. Please help. I'd like to take my dog to the dog park again. Also, my dog is very sweet around his brother, but always shows aggression to other male dogs. He's sweet toward people, too. It's just other male dogs. He also is neutered. His brother is neutered too. I don't know if some of the other dogs at the dog park were neutered though....

If your dog isn't neutered, get it done. That removes a lot of the aggression from mail dogs. Next, get your dog used to being around other male dogs. Keep your dog on a leash and walk by other male dogs. Gradually let the dogs get closer to each other while still on a leash. Make sure it's in "neutral " territory (not your house, not the other dogs house). Do it in places where there is little chance of problems - such as a remote section of a parking lot. Good luck.

Is he entire still? I don't normally recommend this, but I think in his case, castration might help to curb his aggression towards other males. It's certainly worth considering.

Train him discipline him there is no easy way if the other dogs were not on a leash then your dog was "being " aggressive because he was at a disadvantage being on a leash

Http:/ / dogtrainingclassroom.com/ aggressive-dog-training.html 1 Until your dog can be trusted, do not allow him around other people or animals. Do not take him for walks unless you are positive that you can control him in any situation. Step 2 Take your dog to the veterinarian to rule out any medical reason for the aggressive behavior. Step 3 Establish yourself as pack leader (alpha). Your dog must learn to obey your commands, to defer to you for privileges and to never challenge your authority. In the case of aggressive dogs, this must be done with love, patience and gentle authority. Do not attempt to implement techniques such as "the stare " or the "alpha roll "--these may work with most dogs, but could backfire if used on an already aggressive dog. Step 4 Teach your dog the basic commands: "no, " "sit, " "stay, " "down, " and "come. " Practice these commands with her twice a day, every day, for 15 to 20 minutes. Step 5 Teach your dog to walk properly on a leash. You must let him know that you are in control of the walk. If he attempts to pull you along, stop abruptly for a moment, make him wait, then give the command, "Let's go. " If he walks well, praise him; if he pulls again, repeat the lesson, and repeat it each and every time he pulls. Step 6 Practice NILIF ( "Nothing In Life Is Free ") with your dog. Require a "sit " before she is allowed to eat, go outside, go inside, go for walk, receive a treat, receive a toy or receive a greeting from you. Your dog must learn to work for everything she wants, and also that she receives everything she wants from you, the pack leader. Step 7 Do not allow your dog to sleep in your bed. Give him his own bed on the floor next to you. Step 8 At mealtime, you eat first. Put your dog into a "down " while you eat your breakfast, lunch or dinner. Only when you, the pack leader, have eaten, may she have her meal. Step 9 Do not allow behaviors that your dog could misinterpret. Do not play tug-of-war or wrestle with your dog, as he could perceive that he is dominating you. Do not allow your dog to jump on you. If he jumps up, turn around and walk away, thereby taking away from him what he hopes to receive by jumping, your attention. ehow.com/ how_4887554_train-very-aggressive-dog.html

Find a good trainer who uses positive clicker training to look at your situation. You might be able to benefit from participation in a group class or one on one depending on you and your dog's background. Some dogs require a more specialized focus training such as Control Unleashed rather than standard obedience training due to the issues the dog has. Your dog might have fear issues relating to male dogs. Do not use force based methods as they could actually make the dog more aggressive.
