Question: How do i pad train a dog who is already house trained?
(Posted by: twinkiesue on 2010-08-25 11:29:31)
I just adopted a dog from a rescue agency, and he came house trained and is very good about it. I just worry because I work 12 hour shifts (im a nurse) and would like to pad train him as well just in case, how do I do it? |

What you do is install a dog door so the dog can go out on its own during the day. I am sure your friends and family would appreciate if the dog is not using the interior of your home as a toilet. That is really awful that the hours you have to work changed right after you got the dog, and that you had no time before to think about this. Your boss has no heart. |

That's probably taking a step you'll regret later. Is there a neighbor or relative close by that you trust, who could come over to let him out at some point instead? |

You will completely confuse the dog if you start pad training him. Most dogs cannot tell the difference between the pad and your carpet. It would be better for you to find a friend or hire someone who can come in and take the dog for a walk when you have to work long shifts, or put in a dog door. |

How disgusting. Why not just install a dog door? |

I think that installing a pet door would be a much better idea(: or maybe a neighbor could come and let him out every few hours and maybe even take him on a walk for you! |

Do NOT teach your dog that its ok to pee/ poop in the house - they will not use pads and they will start peeing all over the house. Be thankful your dog is house trained now - and keep it that way - the dog should be peeing outside ALL the time. If your dog cannot hold it for a long time, then you really should not own a dog. If you are woking 12 hr shifts, even large breed dogs can have problems holding it that long and will end up with UTI's. I strongly suggest you take the dog back and get a cat (which uses the litter pan) if you are gonna be gone that long every day. Not fair to the dog of any size. |

NO <NO <NO All that is doing is giving the dog permission to pee and poop in your house. and it you like the smell of dirty diapers that is what you will have all over your house or apartment. Have a neighbor or friend come and take the dog out or pay a teenager to come in after school to walk the dog.. |

Take him to doggy day care (most of them offer pick-up/ drop-off as well) or get a dog-walker. Dogs are social beings, and he will get very stressed if left alone so much and could even start destroying the house if you don't crate him. You're essentially talking about un-house-training a dog, and you can not control all the effects that may have. |

If your dog is already house broken, why would you want to take a step backward and let him/ her think it is OK to use the interior of your house as its toilet? If you are not able to find someone, neighbor, friend etc to come to your home at least once while you are gone to let the dog out to relieve itself, then maybe you will have to run home on your lunch break to let the dog out. Installing a doggie door is another suggestion. They do have electronic doggie doors, your dog will have to wear a certain collar, that will allow your dog to go in and out, as needed, but no other animals will be able to get in. I think that it would be a mistake and confusing to the dog to pad train him. The dog will think that it is OK to potty in the house. |
